Flag Etiquette
Old Glory Flag Etiquette
On June 22, 1942, Congress passed a joint resolution, later amended on December 22, 1942, that encompassed what has come to be known as the U.S. Flag Code. Below is a list of the applicable information to help you fly the United States Flag with proper respect.DISPLAY TIME AND ILLUMINATION
The flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset and can be displayed 24 hours a day as long as it is properly illuminated at night. There are many ways you can illuminate the flag ranging from a ground mounted spot light to an overhead solar light.
USA FLAG POSITION
When on a single staff place the USA flag above all other flags. When displaying more than one flagpole, other flags should be flown at a lower height when compared to the USA flag, this includes State and local government flags. If your flagpole has a halyard (Rope) it should be pulled taut to keep the flag close to the pole. A tether can be used to keep the rope in position if needed. The USA Flag should be flown to the viewers left, right side up. The flag should only be flown upside down in times of distress.
FLYING YOUR FLAG DURING BAD WEATHER
It is acceptable to fly your flag during inclement weather as long as the flag is an all weather flag. It will however increase the wear on your flag and flagpole. Our sewn and embroidered Flags are made for all weather conditions however flying any flag during powerful storms will decrease the life of the flag. We recommend removing your flag and storing it safely during severe storms.STORING YOUR FLAG
When not using your USA flag, make sure it is stored properly out of respect.- Make sure the flag doesn't touch the ground
- Store the flag completely flat and folded
- Keep out of sunlight and in dry conditions
FLYING YOUR FLAG AT HALF STAFF
When flying a flag at half staff, on a halyard equipped flagpole (sectional), the flag should be raised to the peak of the pole and then lowered to half staff position (half the distance between the top and bottom of the pole). Half staff on a telescoping flagpole can be achieved by using a tether or adding a halyard conversion kit.
It is important to know when to fly your flag at half staff. Typically this is during times of national mourning. The president may order the flag flown at half staff on other occasions.
